Margaret Hluch: A Vibrant Journey at 66 with Depiction Portraits by Diana
Aging, a journey often feared or misunderstood, carries within its embrace a wealth of experiences, reflections, and newfound freedoms. Margaret, a vibrant 66-year-old artist, provides an inspiring narrative about her perspective on growing older, pursuing passions, and the significance of self-confidence and acceptance. She didn’t really dwell on aging; instead, she focused on doing what she loves most: her art.
Margaret's Outlook on Aging and Her 40 Over 40 Portrait Session
Margaret fondly refers to her age as "double sixes," a symbol of good fortune. Her approach to aging emphasizes the importance of remaining engaged in pursuits that bring immense joy. For her, the paramount desire was to continue indulging in her artwork, a genuine passion that keeps her youthful at heart. While acknowledging the inevitability of physical changes, she emphasizes feeling confident and embracing life's experiences.
“I call them double sixes, and I think that means good luck. What did I think getting older? I guess I didn't really think about it. I think most importantly, I just wanted to be able to do what I love to do as long as I can do it. And that would be doing my artwork, which is for me, really my passion. And I think in a way that does keep me young at heart, at least not maybe the looks, but young at heart.”-Margaret
Retirement and Grand Motherhood
Retirement from teaching has granted Margaret and her husband the freedom to explore diverse cultures through travel. This newfound freedom has seamlessly woven into her creative process, enriching her artistic expressions. Moreover, Margaret expresses immense joy in being a grandmother, cherishing the opportunity to witness her grandchildren grow into remarkable individuals.
“I'm retired from teaching and able to be freer in my time. I love traveling. My husband and I love to travel and see different cultures. Those experiences, those visualness that I encounter go immediately into my work too, as well. I love color, and that's probably why I chose weaving, because I dye stuff and I'm constantly mixing things. And when you travel, you see a lot of different colors and textures as well. I'm happy to be a grandmother. I think that's just the best thing ever. I hope I can live long to see them grow up into beautiful young women.”-Margaret
Insights from a Photo Session
Reflecting on her recent photo session, Margaret candidly shares her motivations and experiences. The session, a spontaneous decision, was a means to indulge in something purely for herself. Despite initial uncertainties, she found inspiration in simplicity, opting for classic attire that resonated with her artistic inclination. Notably, she embraced her scars, considering them unique elements that lend an edge to her identity.
“It was great. It was great to do it. It was fun. I think the hardest part was trying to figure out what to wear, what to bring. But you really were helpful in the fact that you said, just go to my mood board. And I did look at it and I thought, oh, look at beautiful photos, very simple clothing. I mean, just jeans, a white shirt. That helped me kind of tone down and bring what I thought would be simple and classic. And I really wanted to include my scarfs because to me, as an artist, I like to have things look unique. I don't want to look like everybody else. I want to have a little edge to something. My scarfs, even though they're not crazy, but they're different and so I wanted to wear them in the photo shoot too.”-Margaret
Feeling Fabulous During the Photo Shoot
During the professional photoshoot at Depiction Portraits by Diana, Margaret felt at ease, reveling in the luxury of professional makeup and hairstyling. The experience allowed her to explore different poses, guiding her to relax and embrace the moment.
“I felt fine. It was great to have my makeup done and my hair done. Had to worry about that. To me, that's the biggest deal. I could never do makeup, so that was really great. And just doing different poses and different things. You just must sort of, like you say, relax and go with it.”-Margaret
