I was thrilled when Sandi Dettra walked into my Smithburg photography studio for her 40-over-40 portrait session. Despite the distance from Loudoun County, Virginia, she opted to have professional portraits and headshots taken here. Sandi decided to take a leap of faith and be part of this incredible opportunity to celebrate herself and other women over the age of 40 through photography. The entire portrait session turned out to be an unforgettable experience where we captured Sandi's unique beauty and radiance on camera.

In Sandi's perspective, the best part of being over 40 years old is having self-awareness. During most of her twenties and thirties, she was preoccupied with what others thought of her, always concerned about how she appeared or if people judged her. However, when Sandi reached her forties, raising children consumed much of her time and left little room for worrying about those things anymore. Now in her fifties, she has let go of those concerns altogether! Although Sandi still experiences some insecurities from time to time; however, these do not define who she is as an individual - which makes it very exciting for Sandi going forward into the next decade!
“Knowing who I am! I think most of my 20’s and 30’s I was looking at myself through others' eyes. Wondering what they thought, concerned about image or feeling judged. In my 40’s I was so busy with my kids that I didn’t have time to worry about any of that. In my 50’s I have let that go! I am who I am, love it or leave it! I still can have insecurities, but I know they don’t define me. Look out 60!”
Sandi's proudest moments include raising two successful children and serving as an Addiction Counselor for both teens and adults. She admits that parenting is tough work without much recognition, but now that her kids are grown up, she enjoys being more of a friend than just a parent. As an Addiction Counselor, Sandi finds joy in working with individuals struggling with various types of addictions - though she acknowledges it can be challenging at times - requiring her to practice traits such as empathy, patience, and persistence.
“First raising my two amazing kids has been my greatest accomplishment because raising great kids is hard work. It’s dedication, it’s never-ending, and more times than not it is thankless. They are terrific adults now and we have an exceptional relationship. Now that they are adults it’s nice to feel more like a friend, because when they were growing up… I was a parent, not their friend. My second accomplishment would be my career as an Addiction Counselor. I have worked with teens and adults with addictions for 35 years. I feel good when I know how many people, I’ve helped change their lives. There are rough days, sure, but I love my job. “
Sandi is a force to be reckoned with. She's not only a compassionate therapist but also a dedicated mother who juggles parenting and her job as an addiction counselor with finesse. It's no secret that being a mom is tough, but Sandi takes on the challenge head-on, ensuring that her children receive all the love and support they need while she helps others in their journey toward recovery from addiction. It's inspiring to see how much passion and dedication Sandi pours into everything she does - from parenting to counseling- it truly makes all the difference!
Sandra Dettra practices her profession as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor within the Graydon Counseling Group, both in person and online. Sandi’s goal is to help her clients feel safe and not stuck in a life of drugs and addiction. Her clients come as young as 15 but her style is fun with a bit of no-nonsense thrown in regardless of age. "I hope to help you with this challenge in your life, because I love what I do, and I hope to help you on your journey to a better life," Sandi said.
